Electronic Arts and Criterion Games have announced a brand new installment in the studio's acclaimed Burnout series, entitled Burnout Crash!, which is set to appear as a downloadable title later this year.

The Burnout franchise became famous for its over the top nature and by compelling gamers to crash their cars into opponents in the most creative ways imaginable.

Seeing as how the last game in the series, Burnout Paradise, became an instant hit and is still being played despite being launched many years ago, Electronic Arts and Criterion Games, the studio behind the series, are getting ready to debut a fresh take on the franchise, in the form of Burnout Crash.

"Traffic got you down? Blow it up! Criterion Games, an Electronic Arts studio, today announced Burnout Crash! The next installment in the internationally acclaimed Burnout series will explode onto Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network in Fall 2011. Criterion Games has gone back to its roots with Burnout Crash! by bringing the series’ fan-favorite Crash mode to the forefront, adding new top-down gameplay, exciting features and Autolog to let players compete with their friends while embracing their road rage," revealed the two companies.

The game, as you can tell by its name, features just the Crash mode from the game, which rewards players for causing as much havoc in traffic as possible. This includes crashing into other cars, triggering explosions by ramming specific objects, and leaving nothing standing after your rampage.

"Burnout Crash! is a crazy mix of pinball and game shows,” said Richard Franke, Creative Director, Burnout Crash! "We’ve evolved the core gameplay which everyone loved about Crash Mode, and expanded the whole experience using music, style and Autolog to create what we feel is the most mindless fun you can have on any gaming platform."

The game has three separate modes, across 18 crash junctions in six special locations, each requiring players to come up with different strategies to cause the most amount of havoc. By doing so, they unlock new vehicles and receive plenty of surprises.

Burnout Crash also takes advantage of the special Autolog online system, previously seen in Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit or Need for Speed: Shift 2 Unleashed, which allows players to set scores on their Crashwall and then compete against their friends to take their records down.

Burnout Crash is set to appear later this year for the PlayStation 3, via the PlayStation Network, and the Xbox 360, via the Xbox Live Arcade, where it will have special Kinect functionality.
