Big Blue Bubble has announced the first update to its popular puzzle game for iOS, Burn the Rope. Touted by its developers as the most original game of the year, Burn the Rope costs just $0.99 and now features a total of 96 levels, following the addition of 16 brand new ones through the 1.1 update.

The development studio behind the game claims that, since Burn the Rope’s release last month, it has topped the charts in over fifty countries, dethroning best-sellers Fruit Ninja and Cut the Rope

Because of Burn the Rope’s success, Chillingo’s Cut the Rope currently takes the #2 spot in the US App Store, right behind Angry Birds, Big Blue Bubble notes.

To make the announcement even more interesting, the developer decided to throw in Burn the Rope 1.1 with 16 brand new levels, 3 new flame types to choose from, Apple Game Center support with 30 achievements, iTunes (iPod) library support, improved flame handling around corners, and a bunch of level tweaks with many bug fixes.

The improved version is immediately available from Apple’s App Store.

Even better, BBB claims that update 1.2 is in the works. When it arrives, it will bring an additional 16 levels, support for the iPhone 4 and iPod touch 4G Retina displays, overall improved graphics and sound, full level re-design, and even more insects.

For those who are not very familiar with the game, Burn the Rope has players feeding a fire and burning as much rope as they can by tilting and turning their iDevices to keep the flame alive.

The game features some devilishly tricky levels with bugs that crawl along the rope, demonstrating different reactions to the flame from level to level.

According to its makers, “Burn the Rope is incredibly fun and addictive. You will actually feel like you’re burning a rope, yet there’s no need for a fire extinguisher!”
