In the Everglades National Park

According to the Associated Press, rangers in the Everglades National Park have discovered one of the strangest wildlife encounters: the dead body of an alligator measuring 1.8 meters, found inside a 3.9 meter Burmese python (also found dead).

It seems that the snake attempted and even succeeded to swallow the alligator, but the reptile exploded as it tried to digest the creature.

AP's Denise Kalette notes that the species have battled with increasing frequency. Frank Mazzotti, a University of Florida wildlife professor, said the cause of these unusual clashes is the encroachment of Burmese pythons into the Everglades Park.

The gators have had to share their territory with a python population that has swelled over the past 20 years, after owners dropped off pythons they no longer wanted in the Everglades.

"Clearly, if they can kill an alligator they can kill other species. There had been some hope that alligators can control Burmese pythons. ... This indicates to me it's going to be an even draw. Sometimes alligators are going to win and sometimes the python will win", Mr. Mazzotti told AP.
