Gamers need to find long-term friends in the game

At the moment, most of the talk among fans of Destiny is linked to the coming update 1.1.2 and the changes it might make to the title, but the company is also exploring the very concept of the social shooter and explaining why personal connections between players will be more important than any kind of matchmaking system the studio can create.

Deej, the community manager at Bungie, says that the present situation of Destiny is linked to the origins of the company and the way it has always sought to stay as close to the community as possible.

He states, "The community always engineers the best solutions for bringing players together. While Matchmaking is a great resource for introducing total strangers who can share a Crucible match or a Strike, we believe there’s no substitute for a pre-made team. The most challenging activities in Destiny require communication and teamwork."

Bungie is not trying to create a system that can work for everyone, because the needs of the players are too divergent, and the best way to make sure that they have buddies to play with is to give them the tools to find friends and stay in contact with them in the long term.

Destiny has two expansions planned for later in the year

House of Wolves is the second big content drop for the social shooter and Bungie has committed to a launch date set during the second financial quarter of the year.

It will introduce about as much new activities as The Dark Below to the game, with one big raid and some strikes, and gamers are also set to get access to both more weapons and other items to help their Guardians reach the new level cap.

Another rumored expansion will be delivered in the fall and will introduce entirely new environments to Destiny, although it's unclear which planet they will be set on.

Until then, Bungie is focusing on update 1.1.2, which is designed to introduce major changes to the Vault, tweaks to the balance of all weapons, and other improvements to the accessibility of the game.

The studio has not committed to a clear date, but the patch will arrive before the end of April.
