Players need to spend some time to get to know the game

Bungie has talked a bit about its recently released Destiny game and how it transforms as players keep experiencing it, starting as a basic shooter and turning into a deep social experience after around 20 hours, according to the studio.

Destiny rolled out last week, on September 9, worldwide across many different consoles, and quickly went on to sell millions of copies, which is quite impressive for an all-new intellectual property, even if you factor in the millions spent on its marketing.

The game has since gained an uneven reputation, as some players adore the experience, while others find it tedious.

Destiny evolves over time

According to the studio, Destiny was envisioned as an experience that evolves as players spend more and more time with it. Its Executive Producer, Patrick O'Kelley, has exemplified this design idea on the Xbox Wire, by detailing the typical journey a player might have in the new online shooter.

"I think what players will find is that the game unfolds and transforms over time," O'Kelley says. "In the first hour, it might feel like a familiar shooter. Then, players will start to see other players in the world. They will undertake cooperative and competitive activities without really worrying about it."

"Or they might keep on a solo journey but partake in public events. Eventually, they’ll go to the Tower and learn some of the mechanics to improve their character. They’ll make decisions about character customization and ability customization."

After 20 hours, the game is much more than a shooter

The best example, according to O'Kelley, comes after around 20 hours, as players become much better at traversing the rich worlds, interacting with others, and being a part of the community.

"Twenty hours in, I think that players will find that they’ve evolved to playing a whole different kind of game than the shooter that started them off," O’Kelley continues. "They’ll find that they’re immersed in a different world, and are deep into the history of their characters."

Of course, the main end-game goal is to acquire better and better gear, ranging from weapons to armor, by taking part in some of the tougher experiences of Destiny, such as the six-player cooperative raids.

"They’ll have built a community of other players. And, without realizing it, they’ll have learned some sophisticated mechanics that enable them to gear up and dive into a six-player cooperative raid, in pursuit of high-level exotic weapons and armor."

Destiny is finally available across the PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One platforms around the world.
