According to a paper recently published in the journal Psychological Science, the effects of bullying last well into a person's adulthood.

More precisely, it appears that individuals who have been bullied while they were kids are about six times more likely to have noteworthy health problems when they are adults.

What's more, they are six times more likely to smoke on a regular basis and be diagnosed with a psychiatric disorder, EurekAlert reports.

According to the same source, these individuals are bound to also have issues keeping a job.

Commenting on these findings, psychological scientist Dieter Wolke said that, “We cannot continue to dismiss bullying as a harmless, almost inevitable, part of growing up.”

“We need to change this mindset and acknowledge this as a serious problem for both the individual and the country as a whole; the effects are long-lasting and significant,” he added.
