Microsoft confirms the issue exists in several builds

The new Windows 10 build 9926 that was released to Windows Insiders a few days ago comes with several bugs, including one that causes sound on your computer to stop working all of a sudden.

Details are very scarce right now, but this doesn't seem to be an isolated problem, as several users who have already installed the new Windows 10 build 9926 have confirmed a similar behavior on their PCs.

Right now, it appears that the very same issue is experienced in older Windows 10 builds, so it's hard to tell how come that Microsoft hasn't yet found a fix. A company engineer, however, has confirmed it and has said that the development team is still working to address the problem and a patch could come soon.

Reinstalling audio drivers doesn't make any difference

The very same issue also exists on one of our testing computers, and after several hours trying to diagnose the issue and find a resolution, no workaround was found.

Basically, we've tried almost everything, including removing and reinstalling the audio drivers, updating the drivers, rebooting computers, and disabling and re-enabling audio cards, but nothing appears to be working right now, so all devices suffering from this issue are left without sound for now.

“I've been working on this one for a while, sorry I still haven't figured it out. At least the behavior is consistent from 9879 to 9926. Thanks!” Microsoft support engineer John W says in a post on the company's community forums.

New Windows 10 build coming soon

Even though the company has only launched Windows 10 build 9926, a new version of the Technical Preview is expected to be released very soon, Gabriel Aul, head of the Windows Insider program, has recently confirmed.

Details are not yet available, but sources claim that the new build is likely to get the go-ahead in early February, when the first preview version of Windows 10 for phones is also expected to be shipped as part of a new insider program.
