Buffalo Technologies recently announced the release of its MiniStation Shinobi portable hard drive, which the company claims to be the smallest external hard drive in the world, as it is only 5mm thick. The MiniStation is able to provide the same performance offered by a pro-level hard drive, says the company, which also claims it can make on-the-go computing a joy for any user.

Buffalo packed the MiniStation Shinobi with its TurboUSB technology which enables up to 20 percent faster transfer rates than on standard external drives. Backup and synchronization software have also been included to offer users a simple solution for keeping track of their data. The company is confident in the stunning performance this tiny device is able to deliver to users.

“Innovative, easy-to-use products with quality features is what Buffalo is known for,” said Buffalo's VP of sales, Ken Higgins, in a statement. “With the new MiniStation Shinobi, we are continuing to push the envelope with more compact, design conscious storage solutions that will not only meet, but exceed the ever evolving needs of our customers.”

The MiniStation Shinobi is compatible with both Windows-based PCs and Macs. It is available in capacities of 30GB and 60GB and comes with a self-contained cable management system. This unit packs inside a 1.8-inch 4200 rpm hard drive and features a total weight of about two ounces. The MiniStation Shinobi does not require users to carry around an extra power adapter as it can run off USB bus power. Buffalo ships the unit with its SecureLockMobile software which offers data protection even in case the drive is lost or stolen.

The MiniStation Shinobi is expected to become available sometime in October. The price tag has been set at $119.99 for the 30 GB model, while the 60 GB version should cost around $169.99.
