DVD drives may not even be close to HDDs in terms of sales, even though there are both internal and external solutions, but they haven't really been doing badly for themselves either, with Buffalo deciding to push things forward.
Buffalo is one of those companies that has been dealing in various sorts of storage solutions for quite a while, especially external/portable ones.
This means that the outfit has been selling not just hard disk drives and the like, but also optical drives of various shapes and sizes.
Granted, in the case of ODDs, the size can't vary that much, what with the form factor of disks in general.
This doesn't mean the outfit didn't do its best to make its inventions light, aesthetically-pleasing and capable, however.
The newest product to be detailed in a press announcement is a certain portable DVD writer and player.
It communicates with the host PC via the USB 2.0 interface and has a LED power indicator which shows the stability of the power supply.
Mostly, the product should act as a good auxiliary ODD for mobile PCs or any other systems that don't have one. It can read and write DVD+/-R at 8x.
“The sleek, smart design combined with the ease-of-use and portability makes the new DVD drive the ideal optical storage device for any consumer”
says Paul Hudson, Sales Director for Northern Europe at Buffalo Technology.
“The portable DVD drive is the latest Buffalo product to transform into the new stylish design and we welcome it to the family.”
Being USB-powered, the newcomer doesn't need an AC adapter or anything of the sort (works on just the power coming through the USB connection).
Other advantages include integrated USB cables (they snap to the chassis) and the bundled CyberLink Software. Once bought, the item will have 2 years of warranty.
