Japanese company Buffalo is readying a new external storage unit that will feature USB 3.0 and ThunderBolt interfaces, but this time, the storage is handled by an SSD rather than an HDD.

The official name of the new product is Buffalo HD-PATU3S and there will be two versions at first.

One will reportedly have a 128 GB capacity while the second will be able to handle 256 GB of data.

Buffalo says that, when using the ThunderBolt interface, the HD-PATU3S external SSD will reach a high 382 MB/s transfer rate.

We wonder why the USB 3.0 interface wouldn’t deliver the same results as the ThunderBolt connection as long as the maximum transfer rate is under the 625 MB/s maximum that the USB 3.0 can handle.

There is no pricing information available right now, but we don’t expect it to be affordable.
