TVs have become quite versatile nowadays, getting called Smart TVs for a reason, but some of them still can't keep up with the newer products out there, like external HDDs, so Buffalo decided to make their lives easier. External
hard drives are well past the point where they only work with computers, since other products are getting PC-like features and the like.
Smart TVs are one of the more obvious phenomena on today's market, though even they haven't quite reached the apex of development.
Basically, while there are many TVs that can recognize an external hard drive, some of them can't quite keep up with the rise in capacities.
As such, while external HDDs with 2TB and 3TB, or even
4TB, exist, not all TVs support them.
Knowing this, and the tendency of some households to have more than one TV, which aren't necessarily the same model, Buffalo built the HD-ALCTU2/V.
It is a multimedia external drive with the ability to modify its capacity at owners' whim.
Of course, it would be more accurate to say that the HDD can modify how much storage space the TV is allowed to see.
While its maximum is 3TB, a knob can switch to 2TB or even 1TB, and one can even partition the content.
For instance, 1 TB can be dedicated to music and the other 2 TB (as a different partition) to videos (one can switch between the two partitions as well).
As for the looks, the Buffalo HD-ALCTU2/V is colored in black, has some LED lights that indicates used and free space and connects via the USB 2.0 interface.
Finally, built-in rubber mounts grant vibration resistance and the Eco Manager Software makes sure power consumption is low (the drive can settle for as little as 2.1W).
The price
was not disclosed, even though sales are supposed to begin, in Japan, by the end of the ongoing month (October, 2011).
