The Thunderbolt connectivity interface isn't that popular outside Apple Macs and some Intel motherboards, but it definitely delivers a high data transfer performance, as the new Buffalo external SSD has just proven.

Called DriveStation Mini Thunderbolt SSD edition (SSD-WAT), it can read data at 760 MB/s and write it at 615 MB/s.

That means that 800 MB of data (1,000 photos, more than a full CD really) can be moved in 1.3 seconds.

Buffalo offers the DriveStation Mini Thunderbolt SSD in capacities of 512 GB and 1 TB.

The former has a price of £599.99 / $982.60 / €714.62, the latter a tag of £849.99 / $1,392.03 / €1,011.21.

Both are pre-formatted for compatibility with max OS X and can daisy chain. Up to six of them can be linked at once, communicating with the system via a single link, with no performance impact.
