I-O Data may have grabbed attention on the portable storage front, but Buffalo has been no less active on the external, high-speed HDD market, having created a new beast capable of storing 3TB.

Buffalo has definitely been living up to its position as supplier of high-capacity external storage solutions.

The company has been releasing newer and better HDDs, NAS devices and ODDs for many months now, many of which use latest-generation technologies.

The most relevant such technology is the SuperSpeed USB 3.0 interface, which powers even its newest external HDD.

For those interested in a reminder, USB 3.0 can work at a maximum theoretical throughput of 5 Gbps, which is ten times faster than USB 2.0.

The new HDD in question is the HD-LBVU3 and has several spacious and eager platters on the inside, giving it a storage capacity that few can match. To be more specific, the product is a 3 TB unit.

Unlike in I-O Data's case, Buffalo did not go for new color options or case designs in order to make its newcomer stand out overmuch.

Instead, it maintained the same old aspect that worked for all other external models, with a black enclosure measuring 39 x 123 x 189 mm and weighing 1kg.

Nevertheless, Buffalo did throw in some assets intended for granting reliability, such as internal silicone mounts, which reduce vibration and, thus, boost endurance and increase lifespan.

Finally, the power consumption during regular operation is of 18W, though it drops far lower, to 1.6W, while idle, thanks to the existence of ecoManager.

All in all, the Buffalo HD-LBVU3 is an energy-efficient, high-capacity external HDD set to start selling in Japan by the end of January, priced at $322.
