A new initiative from Microsoft is designed to give browsers a score based on their effectiveness when it comes down to protecting users against socially engineered malware.

All that customers need to do is visit YourBrowserMatters.org and the site will automatically rate their browser, even if they’re running Chrome, Firefox or Safari, not just Internet Explorer.

IE9 gets a score of 4 out of 4, in light with findings from security outfit NSS Labs which tested the browser and found that it offers almost perfect protection against socially engineered malware, blocking 99% of this type of threats.

Microsoft partnered with Anti-Phishing League, Identity Theft Council, and Online Trust Alliance for YourBrowserMatters.org, and is leveraging data from its own Microsoft Security Intelligence Report Volume 11.

SIRv11 indicates that there are some 340 million PCs at risk of infections from socially engineered malware due to the fact that their users are running out-of-date browsers. The easy fix? Make sure to keep your browser updated!
