Brooke Burke, one of two hosts of ABC’s Dancing With the Stars, shocked the world when she announced that she had thyroid cancer and would be going into surgery for it. She’s now recovered and, for the first time since the announcement, speaking out about the diagnosis.

Brooke stopped by Good Morning America to talk about her experience and how other people should see it as an example: prevention is always best, the star says.

Video of her interview is below: Burke opted to not have the surgery scar covered with makeup or with a scarf.

“This is a first for me today. I've been scarf-ing it up. But you know what, it's fresh. It's a month old, and I think scars tell a story. And I'm so fortunate,” she said.

“I'm one of the lucky ones. It was shocking. I never thought I would hear the word cancer in relation to myself. The message is really about preventative health,” Burke added.
