Broforce, the impressive side-scrolling shooter from Free Lives and Devolver Digital that's currently out on Steam Early Access, has just received a fresh update that adds two new characters, a variety of gameplay tweaks, as well as some celebrations for the Independence Day weekend, including a discount and a temporary rename into Freedom Simulator 2014.

Broforce was initially offered as a tech demo on the Steam Greenlight system and, after a massive show of support from the community, the small project expanded and is now available via the Steam Early Access system as an unfinished but still playable experience.

Over the last few months, ahead of the game's full debut later this summer, developer Free Lives has rolled out quite a lot of updates for the shooter designed to expand the roster of characters as well as refine existing features.

Now, a fresh patch called the Death from Above Update has just gone live on the Steam platform and brings forth two new characters with special abilities. They are Cherry Broling, modeled after Cherry Darling of Planet Terror fame, and Colonel Broddock, created after Chuck Norris' character in Missing in Action.

"Cherry Broling, the newest female bro, who hovers above the battlefield and unleashes hell from her assault rifle leg, and Colonel James Broddock, who deals exclusively in grenades and whose passion for democracy burns even brighter than his beard, are now playable."

Besides the new characters, the update also brings forth a narrator that will chime in when a bro gets killed in action.

"Bros will also be serenaded by the sweet voice of Finnish sound designer Joonas Turner (The Swapper, Nuclear Throne) who serves as the new Broforce announcer in the latest update. When a bro falls on the battlefield, he’s going to let you know in the most unmistakable of ways."

Besides these new things, the patch also includes quite a few tweaks and bug fixes, such as for errors with certain avatars and jumps, erratic behavior for environmental objects, and other things.

The F12 key should now toggle the appearance of the heads-up display and the camera trigger actions have been improved. The Mookopter should be more aggressive and less forgetful about the player's location and the general enemies should react around 5% faster.

Certain characters have also been buffed, as Ellen Ripbro's plasma damages terrain in a higher degree, while the Broniversal Soldier has a higher rate of fire.

The new Brofoce update is already available for download via Steam and should debut for DRM-free editions in the near future.

As a special July 4 celebration, the game has a 33% discount on Steam and has seen its name receive an addition, as it's called Broforce (Freedom Simulator 2014).
