Poll says Britons sacrifice style for their love for a good bargain

A new poll conducted by Microsoft’s shopping website Ciao shows that Britons are perceived as the worst dressed in all Europe, not because they lack style but because they love a good bargain so much that they’d buy (and wear) almost anything. Discount stores like Primark are primarily responsible for this, The Sun reports.

However, Brits argue, lack of time also plays a very important part in this, since they’re also the hardest working nation, which translates into not having enough time to go shopping and, most importantly, wander the shops for something that fits the latest trends. The Ciao poll, though, points only to the aforementioned love for a good bargain as the only responsible for the apparent lack of style.

“Brits obsessed with cheap stores such as Primark have been voted the worst dressed in Europe. Consumers in seven countries voted Brits bottom – beaten even by the Germans. A whopping 44 per cent said the Brits were worst dressed behind the likes of the Swedes and Dutch in the survey by shopping website Ciao. And the poor polling has been blamed on our fixation with budget clothing from stores including Primark – fondly nicknamed Primani,” The Sun writes on the findings of the online poll.

According to the poll, 85 percent of shoppers in the UK spend less than £100 each month on renewing their wardrobe, the least of the seven nations considered for the survey. At the opposite pole are Germans, who spend about £200 a month (though they were rated as least fashionable by 33 percent of respondents), and the Spanish, who spend over £500 monthly to stay fashionable.

“The Primani habit has led Brits to sartorial disaster. The contribution that Brits have made to the fashion scene over the years includes icons like Vivienne Westwood, Kate Moss and Alexander McQueen. We were shocked to discover that Britain is seen as the worst dressed nation in Europe,” Ciao director Tom Hyde says for the publication.
