Clearly, fans must remember the high controversial and much derided performance Britney Spears put on at the 2007 MTV Music Awards. It was supposed to be the night that would have brought her back into the spotlight after a several-year break, the performance that would remind the entire world that she was the Princess of Pop, and it turned out to be a disaster. This happened because Britney was drunk on tequila when she took the stage.
According to a Wenn report, via
HollywoodRag, writer Steve Dennis claims in his new book, “Britney: Inside the Dream,” that the pop star eventually let emotions get the best of her and sought refuge in a bottle of alcohol. Britney had rehearsed for that one performance for many months in a row, and she clearly knew what was hanging in the balance since a bad performance could kill whatever chances she still had left with the fans and the critics.
At the same time, she was not ready to face the music and, given that she was not in the best place of her life, she chose the easy way out, that it, to drown her pain and the pre-show jitters with several shots of tequila, Dennis says in the book. “Britney herself managed to ruin the most important performance of her life. Hours before the show, her anxieties raged. She decided it was a good idea to start drinking tequila shots to calm her nerves – one after the other.” Dennis writes in the book.
Former flame Justin Timberlake also poured more fuel on the fire and did more harm than good, albeit inadvertently. As per Dennis, Justin went to Britney’s dressing room before the show to wish her all the best, a gesture that she failed to see as a kind one at the time and which only made her temper even worse. “Justin was cool and couldn’t have been friendlier, but that wigged her out more.” Dennis writes of the moments that led up to what remains, to this day, one of the most painfully embarrassing moments in the history of MTV.
It is precisely because of this that what happened such a long time ago continues to fascinate. For a while, many speculated that Britney was drugged during the performance, or that she was simply too “out of it” to realize what was happening to her. Of course, in claiming that she was actually drunk, Steve Dennis is not alone, it has been pointed out.
