Twitter is currently looking to expand its team globally and is looking to set up an office in Europe with London as one of the main candidates. The site wants to establish a sales team for the region to start selling its advertising products in Europe. Twitter representatives met with the British Prime Minister and the Mayor of London last week to discuss the plans. While Twitter enjoys a global audience and is popular in many countries outside of its native US, it only has a relatively small team in San Francisco which handles development, strategy and more recently ad sales.
However, as monetization efforts at Twitter grow stronger, the company is looking to serve more markets with a dedicated sales team.
The European office will handle ad sales for the entire region. Twitter says there are several possible locations being analyzed, though one strong possibility is London.
The British administration is doing its best to woo the Twitter team scouting locations. Both the Prime Minister David Cameron and Boris Johnson, the Mayor of London, met with Twitter execs to discuss possibilities.
"We are considering London and other European locations to create an initial and small presence in 2011," is all that Twitter would say.
However, The Telegraph
says UK officials are very interested in having Twitter in London's new Tech City, an incubator to encourage innovation in the tech sector which takes its cues from Silicon Valley.
While Twitter is bound to generate little revenue in Europe in the next year, and thus little tax revenue for the British, having Twitter choose London would serve as a great advertisement for city and may encourage other tech companies to establish a presence there.
The international office, Twitter's first, would be led by Katie Jacobs Stanton, which previously worked for Google and the White House.
