'Tis the season... for the full release of Britney's new video for her second single, "Piece of Me". You can watch a better quality preview below (and the full clip
HERE) and make up your own minds about it - but let me tell you that it's definitely an improvement compared to the hot mess that was "Gimme More". I'm talking both about the single itself and the video, which was shot in a rush, had a lousy concept and was just plain bad. Not that "Piece of me" is going to win any awards for video of the year - but I can definitely call it a major improvement. Not only does Britney look clean and more focused, but there's also a more substantial and palpable concept behind it which turns it into a much more pleasant experience of that whole jumbled-up, messy but (still) occasionally attractive "Britney style" (or lack thereof).
So, what's "Piece of me" about? Well, as you could probably see from that preview that we saw yesterday, it's about Brit and her best friends in the whole wide world, the paparazzi. Let's get one thing straight here: I'm not buying the whole "Britney harassed by the media, Britney victim of the media" story at all - not one bit. We all know very well all about the incestuous relationship between the pop wreck and the paparazzi who hate and love each other at the same time. We all know that Britney loves every second of the whole media circus she causes every time she steps out, loves the sound of the blitz snapping, loves every time she makes the covers or the headlines. It may be a sick, twisted kind of love, but she depends on the paparazzi, who sometimes act as if they're her only friends in the world, buying gas, feeding her parking meters and buying her frapuccinnos.
So the whole story told both by the video and the lyrics of the song itself cannot be taken too seriously, if you are to enjoy it. Just take it as a play - something you see on a stage somewhere, but don't contextualize it, because you'll end up getting indignant about the whole hypocrisy of the situation and you'll start seeing only the bad parts. And there are some bad parts (like some of Brit Brit's outfits, for example, and the camera angles and the likes), but I think that it's important to notice that this blonde, cleaned up version of the former pop princess bares the most resemblance with the old Britney we all knew and maybe even loved. So my advice to you goes like this: on the whole, it's better to be less keen to criticize the shortcomings and more keen on seeing the good parts. It may not be a masterpiece, but it sure looks like the old Brit, and maybe it's comforting to imagine that beneath all the scandals and the daily Britney media circus, there is still room for something good.
