Despite the difficult development process linked to the Nintendo 3DS handheld, one of the leading developers working on Castlevania: Lords of Shadow – Mirror of Fate believes that the system is well suited to the needs of gamers.

Speaking to the Official Nintendo Magazine, Enric Alvarez, the game director working on the title at MercurySteam, admits that, “It was quite a challenge to create new technology.”

“The Mercury Engine, which is the core technology we have, wasn’t ready for 3DS before going into development. So we created it. It was challenging because the console is very special, it is very powerful and on top of that it has the stereoscopic capabilities and the two cameras.”

The biggest problem seems to have been the positioning of the game cameras, Alvarez adding, “So I think that it’s a very interesting experience. It’s taken a lot of time to develop, but we’ve managed something remarkable on 3DS.”

“It was a challenge, but we always say at MercurySteam that we’re not afraid of technology, what we’re afraid of is what we do with that technology. How we make it worthwhile to the players,” he also argues.

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow – Mirror of Fate is a direct sequel to the 2010 game that rebooted the series and was offered on the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3.

Gamers were able to take control of Gabriel Belmont and use a third-person fighting system to defeat their enemies while also using the Combat Cross to explore levels and solve puzzles.

The developers have not offered many details on Castlevania: Lords of Shadow – Mirror of Fate, but the team will probably try to integrate as many elements of the series into the handheld package as possible.

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow – Mirror of Fate will be launched exclusively on the Nintendo 3DS at some point during 2013.
