Brigitte Bardot slammed Romania on Saturday for culling stray dogs after a Japanese man was bitten to death in Bucharest. The actress is known for donating $ 150,000 in 2001 for mass sterilization of stray dogs in Bucharest, but former mayor, actual president Traian Basescu abandoned the program in less than a month, ordering a mass culling.
After hearing that Bucharest's mayor Adriean Videanu plans to shorten the time stray dogs could be kept in shelters before being put down, the former French film star turned animal rights activist pronounced herself about this issue right away.
"When I think that the only way that has been found is to kill them, I tell you it's not nice what your government is doing," Brigitte Bardot told Radio France International Romania.
The accident that killed the 68-year-old Japanese businessman, who bled to death in central Bucharest after a stray dog bit him in the leg severing a vital artery, made a big fuss around the Romanian authorities.
Even if dozens of people are bitten daily, Bucharest residents are split in to different camps: some agree with culling and others feed the stray dogs on the streets and build makeshift shelters for them.
