Brian Fargo, the leader of the team at InXile working on Wastelands 2, says that the game is so open that players can actually die in the first five seconds of the experience if they make the wrong choice.

He explains to VG247 that, “You start off at a funeral scene, and if you want to pick the shovel up and start digging up the grave of the guy who just got buried in front of the other Desert Rangers, you’re dead.”

Wasteland 2 is designed to always be fair, which means that players will get warnings when they are doing something that’s inappropriate and have time to change course before something bad happens to them.

Areas of the game also feature enemies that are of a higher level than the party of the player, which means that that it is possible to wander into a situation where it is very hard to win the fight.
