Not getting enough rest makes the disease increasingly aggressive

Case Western Reserve University experts, led by physician and research scientist Cheryl Thompson, PhD, say they've recently discovered an interesting link between insufficient rest and women's chances of being affected by highly aggressive breast cancer.

The research suggests that not getting enough sleep promotes the development of very aggressive cancers that are more difficult to treat than this type of tumor usually is. The cancers also have a higher chances of reoccurring, PsychCentral reports.

“This is the first study to suggest that women who routinely sleep fewer hours may develop more aggressive breast cancers compared with women who sleep longer hours,” Thompson explains.

The connection appears to be strongest in post-menopausal women, the team goes on to say. Details of the new study appear in the latest issue of the journal Breast Cancer Research and Treatment.
