Brazil has some strict laws when it comes to elections. A couple of YouTube videos in which a candidate for mayor for the city of Campo Grande was attacked caused a lot of controversy, but also a lot of problems for Google.
Since the search engine giant failed to remove the videos, a judge from the Mato Grosso do Sul state ordered the arrest of Google Brazil’s president and a statewide suspension of YouTube and Google for a period of 24 hours.
According to
The Washington Post, Google representatives appealed the decision that ordered the takedown of the videos, claiming that since YouTube is a platform, they can’t be held responsible for what customers publish.
It’s uncertain at this time if the websites have been in fact shut down in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, and law enforcement representatives claim that they haven’t received any orders to arrest Fabio Jose Silva Coelho, the president of Google Brazil.
