In preparation for the coming 2014 FIFA World Cup, Brazil's Mineirão Stadium has been fitted with a brand new rooftop solar array.

The people who decided to install this solar array on said stadium say that the world is in dire need of more environmentally-friendly World Cup events, and that the decision to install this solar array is but one way of promoting sustainability. Inhabitat reports that the engineers in charge of overseeing this construction project are fairly convinced that the 2.5 MWp solar array will generate enough energy to power about half of the stadium.

However, rather than being used directly by the stadium, the energy produced by this array will be fed into the national grid and thus made to provide households in Mineirão's proximity with clean energy.

Costs for this green-oriented project amounted to $16.1 million (€12.44 million).
