Presently, a significant amount of the electricity that is fed into Brazil's national grid on a yearly basis comes from hydropower. However, it looks like the country is ready and willing to start making the most of other green energy sources.

Tree Hugger reports that, by the year 2021, Brazil wants to have 10% of its overall energy demands met by wind power alone.

Thus, the country hopes that, by said date, it will have succeeded to install as many wind turbines as would be needed to have the city of Sao Paulo, which is home to about 11 million people, run on nothing but wind power.

Commenting on this project, Mathias Becker, the current president of wind energy company Renova Energia, said that, “Wind is the perfect complement for hydro base that we have in Brazil.”

“When it rains, we don't have wind. When the wind blows, there is no rain,” he went on to say.
