As the Cannes release of the movie is drawing near

Director Quentin Tarantino is currently gearing up for the release of the film that is poised to get him back into the good graces of all his fans, the “spellcheck-defying” “Inglourious Basterds.” Meanwhile, main star Brad Pitt is gracing the latest issue of Vogue magazine in character, as photographed by Brigitte Lacombe.

“Inglourious Basterds” has been described as “‘Pulp Fiction’ meets ‘The Dirty Dozen’ meets ‘The Good, the Bad and the Ugly’, set in Nazi-occupied France,” where a group of men who have absolutely no fear set out to show the Germans what terror is all about. Led by Lieutenant Aldo Raine, the men set out on a mission to exterminate the Nazis in a bid to give them a taste of their own medicine.

The Vogue photo spread is meant, of course, to raise awareness on the release of the film, which will take place this month at Cannes. Audiences everywhere will only see it, though, once it hits theaters in August 2009.

In the meantime, fans of both the director and the members of the cast will just have to do with the photos, which also include a group shot with Melanie Laurent as Shosanna Dreyfus, Christopher Waltz as Colonel Hans Landa, Omar Doom as P.F.C. Omar Ulmer, Daniel Brühl as Frederick Zoller, Tarantino, Eli Roth as Sergeant Donny Donowitz, Diane Kruger as actress Bridget von Hammersmark and, of course, Brad Pitt himself.

Although the promotion for the film has not kicked in full gear just yet – fans getting only a short teaser trailer and a couple of official posters – the hype for the production is slowly building up.

And it’s not just Pitt that’s generating this heightened sense of anticipation, as much as is the promise that “Inglourious Basterds” will offer viewers the chance of experiencing war as seen through the eyes of Quentin Tarantino, it has been said. For a director with his creativity and love of innovation, that’s not a small promise, one might as well add.

“Whether bludgeoned, stabbed or shot through the head, Hitler’s henchmen have clearly got a fight on their hands and we have to say that the new art makes us more excited to see ‘Inglourious Basterds’ than ever before. We have to say, truly inspired poster art feels few and far between these days with floating heads and tedious action cutouts proving far too commonplace. It’s good to see a little flair being employed once in a while so props to QT. More, please.” Empire Movies wrote at the time of the release of the first posters.

Below is also the official first trailer for the film. Watch and enjoy.
