Jennifer Aniston and Brad Pitt’s marriage ended in 2005 in what is, to this day, one of the biggest cheating scandals to rock showbiz. The story goes that he met and fell in love with Angelina Jolie, his current wife, on the set of their action movie “Mr. and Mrs. Smith,” and they embarked on a clandestine relationship.

When Aniston found out, she kicked him out of the house and filed for divorce. The narrative of the cheated spouse and the love triangle, as well as of the feud between this two A-list actresses, has been tabloid fodder since then.

But there was never any truth to it, Aniston reveals in her brand new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, whose cover she also graces.

Not a bitter split, despite what years-old rumors would have you believe

Until this year, Aniston never directly addressed the reasons for the split from Pitt, which, in the collective mind, meant that she was silently confirming reports that she’d been cheated on. The time has come to put a stop to the madness, she’s been saying a lot in her recent interviews.

Aniston, as you might have heard, was an Oscar favorite with her performance in “Cake,” which marks a clear departure from the girl-next-door-type of roles she’s been favoring in rom-coms. Her name was tossed around a lot in conversation about the Oscars 2015, which will take place a month from now, but as it turns out, she wasn’t even nominated.

However, that’s not diminishing the interest the press is taking in her, which, in turn, she encourages because she still needs to promote “Cake,” which is getting a wide theatrical release starting this Friday, January 23, 2015.

So, when THR asked her about the Pitt divorce, she didn’t cut any corners in replying.

“We’re not in daily communication,” she says. “But we wish nothing but wonderful things for each other. Nobody did anything wrong. You know what I mean? It was just like, sometimes things [happen].”

“If the world only could just stop with the stupid, soap-opera bull[expletive],” Aniston adds. “There’s no story. I mean, at this point it’s starting to become... please, give more credit to these human beings.”

It does seem like she’s saying no one cheated on the other, that the divorce happened because they simply fell out of love.

An unhappy, unsatisfying marriage

Some years ago, Brad Pitt caused quite a media storm when he attempted to offer a satisfying answer to the same question: what went wrong between him and Jennifer? Unlike Aniston in this instance, he failed to find the non-offensive middle ground and said something along the lines of, I was very unhappy in my very unsatisfying marriage, so I smoked a lot of pot and then I broke free and found myself.

Ironically, he had said something similar only 2 years before, so this only served to “confirm” the cheating rumors that had already been making the rounds for such a long time.

Jennifer would have us believe now that there was no cheating scandal, and that the official line told by Pitt and Jolie all along (i.e. that they only got romantically involved after his divorce was finalized) is the only truth there is. Do you believe her?
