Former three-division world champion Hector Camacho, aka Hector “Macho,” is in critical condition after being shot in Puerto Rico. Camacho was a passenger in a car involved in a drive-by shooting, which ended in the death of the driver.

Details on the incident remain sketchy at this time, but various reports online suggest that the boxer was shot in the jaw and is now in critical condition at condition at the Centro Medico in San Juan.

Police already have a suspect in custody but, as noted, details remain a bit vague right now. More info is bound to emerge in the following hours, including on the boxer’s condition.

“According to the medical director of the hospital, Camacho was struck once in the left jaw and the bullet traveled down his neck and lodged in his right shoulder,” the New York Daily News writes after speaking to representatives of the Centro Medico.

“Along the way the bullet fractured his 5th and 6th cervical vertebrae and Camacho lost so much blood that he needed a transfusion,” the report further notes.

“There was no mention of paralysis and doctors could not determine whether he had been struck by a second bullet,” the NY Daily News writes.

TMZ has a slightly different account of the shootout, saying Camacho was hit “several” times in the face and neck, not just once and definitely more than twice.

It also reports that the whole thing went down at 7 p.m. local time, when a car rolled up to the vehicle Camacho and the driver were in, and someone from inside simply opened fire.

TMZ too notes that the driver of Camacho’s car was killed in the accident, while stressing that further details on the boxer’s condition are pending.

A police investigation is currently underway. We’ll keep you updated.
