Windows, Mac and Ubuntu apps won't be improved anymore

People in possession of a personal computer may or may not use the Boxee video streaming services regularly, but those who do may be in for a surprise.

The surprise is not necessarily pleasant but not exactly bad either.

The good news is that the Windows, Mac and Ubuntu apps just received the latest update, version 1.5.

The bad news is that Boxee is not going to continue developing better incarnations of this software for PCs.

Instead, it is going to focus on the Boxee Box and the other video streaming devices that run the Boxee OS.

That means Nuu Media and Iomega products, among others.

To part with its PC customers on a high note, Iomega provided, as part of the update, a new interface, faster and easier browsing and quicker searching.

In addition, the user library will experience a higher influx of information about movies.

Furthermore, version 1.5 brings a new WebKit compatible with the HTML5 language for structuring and presenting content.

People who utilize the Boxee software will want to download the new update package as soon as possible, since it is only available until January, 2012 (the Boxee Box will get it automatically by then).

“We believe the future of TV will be driven by devices such as the Boxee Box, Connected TVs / Blu-Rays and 2nd screen devices such as tablets and phones,” says Team Boxee.

“While there are still many users who have computers connected to their TVs, we believe this use case is likely to decline as users find better alternatives. People will continue to watch a lot of video on their computer, but it is more likely to be a laptop than a home-theater PC and probably through a browser rather than downloaded software.”

Those interested can go here to read the release notes or visit the blog where Boxee elaborates on each feature and gives individual download links.
