The folks at boxee are proud to announce a free remote application for using the boxee entertainment solution on the Apple TV via iPhone or iPod touch. The app is aimed at those who've misplaced / lost / damaged or simply don't like the Apple Remote that ships with every new Apple TV and iMac.

According to the makers of the now-popular Apple TV add-on, “on a laptop or connected to an HDTV, boxee gives you a true entertainment experience to enjoy your movies, TV shows, music and photos, as well as streaming content from websites like Netflix, CBS, Comedy Central, Last.fm, and flickr.” Clearly, an iPhone-based remote app was in order for such a great service. “If you've lost your Apple remote, or for whatever reason don't have (or want) one, boxee's remote app is a pure gem,” Mac focused site and boxee fan TUAW reveals in a post.

The people behind boxee say that “[development] took a while, but we finally got our iPhone remote app approved.” The developers trust this is “good news for anybody who lost their tiny Apple remote.” Also noted on the boxee blog are the following aspects regarding the new remote application:

- the boxee remote app has two modes: Gesture and Buttons - in the Gesture mode you need to hold down your thumb and move it around in order to navigate. - clicking on the boxee logo acts as Select/Play/Pause - dragging the boxee logo to the edges of the screen will act as a continuous up/down/left/right - clicking in an input field will open up the iPhone Qwerty keyboard and will enable you to easily enter text - the app works over WiFi, so make sure the WiFi on your iPhone is turned on.

The boxee iPhone remote app is “very basic,” the development team adds, “but we think it’s a good start [...] based on your feedback we’ll add more functionality to it, so please post your ideas on getsatisfaction.com/boxee [...] let us know what you think!” the post ends.
