Everyone talked last week about the "Transformers" movie and how much of a success that was and how it's gonna be the beginning of a beautiful franchise and all that. Well I say the "Transformers" movie didn't quite stand out to the task because it was topped by a children's film. Although Harry Potter's latest incarnation is supposed to be all dark and stuff, at least darker than the other movies, it is still a child's play which rocked the movie-goers, either adult or otherwise.
Harry managed to break the two-week robotic domination, with a total of $330 million worldwide in three days, as opposed to the $320 million gathered by robot fights in the last two weeks. These two blockbusters still have a lot of competing to do, but somehow I feel that, ultimately, if a naive movie sequel for kids crushed the big-budgeted action flick of the summer in only three days, the high-tech robots have already lost the ideological battle. Also this Sci-Fi toy movie has been repeatedly panned by high-profile critics so, I tend to think, when considering a future hypothetical sequel, one must take into consideration a change in the idea, maybe even a new director.
This new "Harry Potter" movie, which represents the Warner's biggest opening hit up-to-date, is surely to become the best selling part of the franchise and one of the many films this year to contradict the urban myth that sequels are weaker both in artistic merits and box-office value. Although Harry's star is on the rise, the competitors are strong-willed, some other successful sequels still posing a serious threat to the would-be dominance of kiddie magic. Well Harry, you're supposed to protect the world, not conquer it, he he he...
Although some nay-sayers thought that summer was somehow "cursed" for the junior wonder-wizard due to the commercial failure of one of the previous incarnations, namely "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban", this time everyone should bow to the success of this increasingly popular saga, with only two episodes left to film. See you next year Harry and try to stay out of trouble. Oh these raging hormones...what can one do...
