‘Bourne 4’: No Jason Bourne, No Matt Damon

Matt Damon and even the Jason Bourne character will not be in fourth “Bourne” film, director confirms

The tentatively called “The Bourne Legacy,” also known as “Bourne 4,” is happening, though it may not be in a way that’s pleasing to fans: director Tony Gilroy has just confirmed that the film will be without Matt Damon and without the character Jason Bourne.

The announcement, though not that shocking (at least in part), has gotten fans all up in arms because of the obvious question of how can one have a Jason Bourne movie without Jason Bourne.

In previous interviews, Damon made it crystal clear that he had no intention of returning to the franchise for a fourth installment, saying he was too “old” for the role.

At the same time, he said he believed the movie studio would go for either a reboot or a prequel, so that his Bourne character would be played by another, perhaps younger, actor.

As it turns out, not only is Matt Damon not returning to the franchise but neither is Jason Bourne – you know, the character who gave the franchise its name and made it what it is.

According to recently-signed director Tony Gilroy, fans won’t be disappointed though, because, creatively speaking, this is the best thing that could have happened to the franchise, E! Online informs.

“It’s a completely original screenplay. This is not a reboot or a recast or a prequel. No one’s replacing Matt Damon,” Gilroy says when asked whether “Bourne” will go down the new “Spider-Man” path.

“There will be a whole new hero, a whole new chapter… this is a stand-alone project,” the director adds.

Granted, the director imagines a Bourne film without Bourne is an idea not many fans can come to terms with from the get-go.

“The easiest way to think of it is an expansion or a reveal. Jason Bourne will not be in this film, but he’s very much alive,” he offers.

“We’re going to show you the bigger picture, the bigger canvas. When you see where we’re going and see what we’re doing it’ll be pretty obvious… but Jason Bourne’s activities in the first three films is the immediate trigger,” the director adds.

Hopefully, this Bourne-less and Matt Damon-less film will lay the foundation for yet another successful franchise, Gilroy hopes.

“I’m building a legend and an environment and a wider conspiracy… the world we’re making enhances and invites Jason Bourne’s return,” the director explains.

They are insane if they think they can do a movie w/o Matt Damon as Jason Bourne. People are not silly. We can relate to an Americanize "007" fighting against the inconsistencies and/or unfairness of the "system". This ain't Batman, Siderman or Superman where the lead clown character can be played by anyone.

Go EASY! The disapprearing act of Jason Bourne in Bourne 4 (or "Legacy"), isn't necessarily permanent. Even Sean Connery (Kow Tow everyone!), made his comeback from retirement to do a "farewell". So never say NEVER! Nevertheless, Bourne without Matt is like Bourne without Mel, or Melbourne without the Cup. It can be done and it will be interesting. We're ready, as long as George Lazenby isn't in the lead and the DVD player doesn't do a disappearing act.

I believe the Bourne series has the potential of another James bond 007 series. I hope they don't screw this up.

Matt Damon made the Jason Bourne character. I agree with Danni: No Matt Damon+No Jason Bourne=Crap!

All the crappy lines with: "we're going to show you the bigger picture"... "there will be a whole new hero, a whole new chapter"... do you really think you can fool ALL of us? You will try to use the glory of the past movies to push in front a totally different thing for what? Money, of course... well, I for one won't pay a dime to see this cheap copy... I prefer to review a thousand times the real ones, even with the risk of learning them by heart...

MATT DAMON IS JASON BOURNE. No one will ever replace him. Still, I'm excited to see this new movie - especially with the stellar cast involved.

Jeremy Renner - the fans will see if you're as good as Jason Bourne. Even so, Bourne's #1 - and Damon (you're not old, man!) better come back for a Bourne 5 and future Bourne sequels...AND BRING JULIA STILES WITH YOU!

Nicky needs more film time and her relationship w/Bourne must be further explored because that tease in Ultimatum isn't satisfying at all!!!

Comment #15.1 by: dallasn8 on 03 Jan 2012, 23:37 GMT

julia stiles is the worst part of the series so far... when they gave that relationship tease in 3, I thought for sure they would ruin the series trying to explore that in 4.... little did i know they were just gonna flat out ruin the series on their own!

Duuuuuuuude how the hell are they gonna do a Bourne movie without Jason Bourne. Damon is Bourne period point blank. It would be worth seeing if he made some sort of cameo hinting of a Bourne 5 but otherwise NOOO!!!

Comment #20 by: Dic on 11 Jan 2012, 01:08 UTC reply to this comment

Without Damon in the film as Bourne it will be less and to not have Jason Bourne as a character at all in the movie makes it nothing but another movie.

Comment #20.1 by: Mr. Bourne on 23 Jan 2012, 21:15 GMT

THIS IS ....... I don't have the words! And then - with Jeremy Renner. Starting to look more like a "go go go for the profit"-situation. FC em...im mad!!!

Comment #21 by: Browny on 18 Feb 2012, 00:07 UTC reply to this comment

I can follow the 4 film working if it shows that film 5 will need bournes return,to bring it out and bourne could be allowed back back to be an agent like pamela landry
Either way how ever you do it JASON BOURNE = mATT dAMON
Thank you

Comment #22 by: frank on 22 Feb 2012, 01:34 UTC reply to this comment

A new Bourne movies! But Bourne without Matt Damon is not a real Bourne movies sorry is a pale copy
Matt Damon would do this last film. This would have come full circle and then to make film with a new person for continuation...

I am really sorry and disappointed by Matt Damon! The fans deserved more consideration

Comment #23 by: Landryfordamon on 21 May 2012, 03:33 UTC reply to this comment

If Matt will not be in it I don't plan to go see it.

Comment #24 by: john on 22 May 2012, 22:23 UTC reply to this comment
