Most people are under the impression that dolphins are fun, loving creatures who would never harm a fly. As it turns out, this is not exactly true.

On the contrary, it sometimes happens that dolphins do things almost nobody would ever imagine them doing. Mind you, this does not mean we should love them less.

Daily Mail tells us that, just recently, Caroline Weir of St. Cyrus in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, witnessed two bottlenose dolphins attacking and killing two porpoises.

She later told the press that, as far as she could tell, the dolphins killed the two marine mammals not because they had any intention to feed on them, but because they were looking to have some fun.

Thus, Caroline Weir recollects that, at one point, they were throwing one of the porpoises' dead body around, and appeared to be enjoying themselves doing it.

“Flipper is not as sweet and innocent as he seems. Bottlenose dolphins regularly do this, a bit like a cat plays with a mouse,” the Scottish Marine Animal Strandings Scheme said in a statement after news of this incident hit the public.

“Once the porpoise is dead they lose interest. They are also known to kill infants of their own species,” the organization further detailed.

The bodies of the two porpoises killed by the bottlenose dolphins eventually washed ashore, and were removed by experts with the Scottish Marine Animal Strandings Scheme.

The bodies are to be closely examined, and specialists hope that they will be able to establish the exact cause of death.
