Botswana Will Only Approve Mining Site if Bushmen Receive No Water

Although the Bushmen living in the Central Kalahari Game Reserve already have a difficult time finding water and are facing severe shortages, a new ruling by the Botswana government says that the Gem Diamonds company can only operate in the region if it denies water supplies to the indigenous people. The central authorities also reserved all rights on the boreholes that will result from the company's industrial activities and say that they will most likely use them for wildlife.

The Bushmen were also unlawfully evicted from their lands by the army and the police, because most of the country still looks at them driven by a great deal of racism. In fact, the Botswana authorities used about the same excuses to kick them off their lands as they used centuries ago to justify the enslavement of thousands by white colonists.

“It’s absolutely scandalous that the Botswana government is insisting that Gem Diamonds does not provide the Bushmen with water. The government is clearly determined to go to any lengths to keep the Bushmen off their land,” says Stephen Corry, director of Survival International.

An independent company surveyed the Bushmen earlier this year and asked them for their opinion on the opening of the new exploitations. But, seeing how the leader of the assessment team moved to the board of Gem Diamonds Co soon after the study was completed, it goes without saying that all their results are fake.

“As to whether the Bushmen are in favor of the mine – the lack of information provided to them means they are in no position to be able to say. It is likely that they don’t even know they will not be able to access water from the mine site,” Corry argues.

The UN has harshly criticized the nation for its behavior on issues related to the Bushmen, and did not miss this occasion to do it again, saying that the Botswana government was treating the natives as no more than a pest, seeing how even wild animals get a place to drink water from.

The above article is false and biased. The government of Botswana is against keeping the bushmen in nature and game reserves for tourist to come take photos and sell them to the west. What the government wants is for this people to leave together in reasonable groups whereby it will be possible to provide them with social anemities such as schools, clinics and other vital services.
The animals that are said that they want to hunt are being depleted daily as these people no longer run around hunting with bow-and-arrows. They now ride horses and use powerful guns! Should they be allowed to kill animals as they wish there won't be no more animals soon than they survival can say Botswana made the right choice.

My view is that times have changed so has the bushmen, and that's a fact. If survival international wants to help this people it can do so by working hand in hand with the Botswana government.

It is shocking to read such kind of news from world wide websites because all the information given by Correy is not true and indeed tarnishing the Democratic Republic of Botswana. There was no such thing like forcefull eviction of the Bushmen and the "Point of Correction" there is that those people are not called the Bushmen. They are also part of Batswana, a tribe called Basarwa. So, I would to appeal to those people who want to turnish the beautiful image that we portray in Botswana.

Botswana is a Democratic country and most of the decisions are taken accordingly. Our army was formed to protect the nation but not to terrorise. The decision of relocation Basarwa was to specific reasons. People like Correy, just say things that they dont have proof of. Those people are not living a decent life and the government wanted to bring them where the developments are taking place.

People should do serious research before they publish news.

This is absolutely scandalous, shameful behaviour by the Botswana authorities. Unbelievable.

Survival International is not acting on behalf of any Motswana including the Basarwa. The gvmet of Botswana has given the Basarwa an option to live in the reserve in thier natural state of habitation, that means hunting and gathering as they have always done, without the use of guns and not for trade, however that is not the lifestyle that the Basarwa people are living, which then defeats the whole purpose of thier argument. They hunt endengered animals, not with bows but with guns, thier rations that they were getting from gvmt, they were trading them for alcohol.

However, in the event that the Basarwa are moved so the ENTIRE nation of Batswana can benefit from that land, the gvment of Botswana should then state thier case clearly. If we the people of Botswana collectively agree for development then Idont see what the problem is. There is cost associated with providing for everybdy, including providing for the Basarwa, that cost must be met somehow, SI is not about to provide for the Basarwa let alone for the entire nation.

"Those people are not living a decent life and the government wanted to bring them where the developments are taking place."

This is not democracy ... in democracy, no one is moved from their land against their will, under reasons such as development. Reasons such as these are used worldwide when politicians are trying to disguise things for something they are really not.

"The animals that are said that they want to hunt are being depleted daily as these people no longer run around hunting with bow-and-arrows. They now ride horses and use powerful guns!"

Are you trying to say that the Bushmen are the only ones responsible for animal decline? Let's get real for a moment.
