The Big Picture, the popular photo blog from Boston.com, is now available as an iOS application specifically targeting the Apple iPad. Compatibility is also enabled for iPhone, and iPod touch devices.

The Big Picture from Boston.com presents stories through high-quality photographs gathered from around the world.

The iOS application, "The Big Picture from Boston.com", was created by Alan Taylor.

Recently updated to version 2.0, it adds support for the Apple tablet, and introduces product enhancements including social sharing.

Needless to point out, the iPad version boasts a more detailed user interface, with users being able to see previews of the next batch of photos as they view their image of interest on the upper half of their 9.7-inch screens.

“Boston.com’s immensely popular and award-winning blog, ‘The Big Picture’, is now available as an iPad and iPhone app,” the company announced today.

“Far and away, ‘The Big Picture’ is our most popular blog, with a worldwide following. It’s able to tell a story that is moving and meaningful, through a medium that needs no translation,” said Robert Kempf, vice president of digital for Boston.com.

The service covers an immense range of topics, such as the Icelandic volcano eruption, the war in Afghanistan, and the World Cup, Boston.com said in a press release.

More timeless subjects are also covered, including astronomy and facts relating to our planet.

Key features of the app, as listed in the iTunes App Store description, are:

• View all recent entries from The Big Picture with complete introductions to the topic

• Photographs presented in landscape mode for optimal viewing and easy navigation

• Webby Award Winner and People’s Voice Winner for Best Use of Photography

Indeed, in 2009, the service won two Webby Awards for Best Use of Photography, and has also been nominated for the South by Southwest (SXSW) Web Awards and Editor & Publisher’s Eppy Awards.

Application users will see new photographic essays posted every other Monday, Wednesday and Friday, according to the developer of the app.
