The developer will make a simultaneous release

Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel is an upcoming game from Gearbox that follows the other two titles in the Borderlands series. The title prevents anyone from calling it a sequel, but the good news is that Linux users will be able to enjoy it at the same time with the rest of the Windows and Mac OS X gamers.

The Linux platform has spent many years being ostracized by game developers and publishers alike. Now that we have the Steam for Linux client, more and more games are being ported, but there still are very few developers that do simultaneous releases on all the platforms. Until now, only the smaller indie developers had the power to pull this off, but it looks like Borderlands is aiming to change that.

It's not every day that we get a game like Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel on the Linux platform. This is what people refer to as a triple-A title, so it should be very interesting to see how well it's going to perform on the open source OS.

Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel is actually a prequel

The pun used by the Gearbox team is interesting, but it can be a bit confusing. The action of the game takes place before the first and second games, but it's being released after them. It could have been called The Prequel, but it wouldn't have been funny.

"Discover the story behind Borderlands 2 villain, Handsome Jack, and his rise to power. Taking place between the original Borderlands and Borderlands 2, the Pre-Sequel gives you a whole lotta new gameplay featuring the genre blending fusion of shooter and RPG mechanics that players have come to love."

"Float through the air with each low gravity jump while taking enemies down from above using new ice and laser weapons. Catch-a-ride and explore the lunar landscape with new vehicles allowing for more levels of destructive mayhem," reads the entry on the Steam website.

The game is being ported by Aspyr Media and they have done a great job with Borderlands 2, which is now available for Linux users. The system requirements for the game are pretty reasonable and most users should be able to meet them: SteamOS or Ubuntu 14.04 LTS, an Intel Core 2 Quad or an AMD Phenom II X4 processor, 4 GB of RAM, at least an NVIDIA GeForce 260 Gtx, and 13 GB of available space.

The guys from Aspyr Media also say that it's possible to have lower system specs than this and still be able to play the game. Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel is expected to arrive on October 17 for Linux, Windows, and Mac OS X.
