Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel is set to receive its second major expansion, in the form of the Ultimate Vault Hunter Upgrade Pack: The Holodome Onslaught on December 16, and at the same time a free update for the title is going to add a third playthrough mode for those who like challenges.

Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel appeared earlier this year and delivered, as its name suggests, an experience that takes place between Borderlands 1 and 2, chronicling the rise to power of antagonist Handsome Jack, while offering new playable characters, fresh environments, and plenty of bad guys to shoot or weapons to collect.

The steady stream of DLC has already started with the Handsome Jack Doppelganger DLC, which introduces a new playable character in the form of a clone of Handsome Jack, and now the second premium add-on is confirmed by 2K Games, Gearbox Software, and 2K Australia.

The new add-on launches this month

Officially titled the Ultimate Vault Hunter Upgrade Pack: The Holodome Onslaught, the DLC includes quite a few different things. Chief among them are the new story missions that feature Borderlands 2 characters Gaige and Axton, who ask for more details from narrator Athena about the adventures of her comrades in the Pre-Sequel.

"This add-on pack features all-new narrative content including appearances from veteran Vault Hunters Gaige and Axton, who recently returned to the Crimson Raiders HQ. While they were gone on a mission, they missed out on the events of Borderlands The Pre-Sequel and ask Athena to recount the story. Since they’re not the most patient Vault Hunters on Pandora, they just want an abbreviated version – only the juicy, violent stuff," the studio explains on the website.

As such, Athena will take players to the Holodome Onslaught experience, which is a new challenge arena featuring waves of enemies complete with some of the most iconic baddies from the regular story campaign. New weapons, class mods, heads, and skins are available as loot for those who vanquish the most enemies.

A level 60 cap is also included in the add-on

Besides these new story adventures, the DLC also includes, likes its name suggests, the Ultimate Vault Hunter Upgrade pack, which raises the level cap from 50 to 60 and adds more skill points to the mix.

All Pre-Sequel owners will also be treated to a free update that brings forth the Ultimate Vault Hunter mode, meaning players can embark on three different playthroughs of the game. The new mode brings extra difficulty and adds the option to reset campaign progress or enable enemies to scale up to your current level. Many other things will also be included in the patch.

Both the update and the add-on arrive on December 16 on PC, PS3, and Xbox 360.
