Gearbox Software has announced that Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, the third installment in the wildly popular Borderlands series, has gone gold on all platforms.

The news comes from Gearbox Chief Executive Officer Randy Pitchford himself, who took to Twitter to make the announcement. For those unfamiliar with what this means, when a game goes gold it means that it's completely finished and has been sent to mass production, with nothing else coming between it and its official launch date.

The first-person shooter / role-playing game hybrid is set between the events of Borderlands and Borderlands 2 (hence the crazy title) and follows the rise to power of Handsome Jack.

The action takes place on Pandor's moon, Elpis, taking advantage of various new gameplay mechanics such as low gravity that enables you to launch enemies into space, and oxygen tanks that are required for breathing but can also be employed as jetpacks.

As in previous entries in the franchise, gamers will be able to undertake the adventure by choosing one of four different characters, with distinct play styles and personalities. Only this time around, instead of having the cast made out of completely new characters, players will be able to step into the shoes of Claptrap, Wilhelm, Athena and Nisha, non-playable characters that series veterans will no doubt recognize.

Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel is slated for release on October 14 in North America and October 17 worldwide, coming to the PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 platforms.
