The Mechromancer class in Borderlands 2, which will be released after the game’s launch as DLC, will have a special skill tree called Best Friends Forever, which includes an ability named Close Enough that makes missed shots ricochet and hit nearby targets.

Borderlands 2 includes four different classes, ranging from the Siren, which returns from the original, to all-new ones like the Gunzerker, the Commando, or the Assassin.

As a treat, developer Gearbox Software will launch a special bit of downloadable content after the game’s release, in the form of the Mechromancer class, which is free for those who pre-order the title before its September release.

Now, because the actual game has been completed, Gearbox is working on the new class and its Lead Designer, John Hemingway, has revealed a few interesting details to Eurogamer.

According to the developer, there’s a special skill tree called Best Friends Forever, which includes an ability named Closed Enough that gives inexperienced players a chance to become more useful to their friends when playing cooperatively.

"The design team was looking at the concept art and thought, you know what, this is actually the cutest character we've ever had. I want to make, for the lack of a better term, the girlfriend skill tree. This is, I love Borderlands and I want to share it with someone, but they suck at first-person shooters. Can we make a skill tree that actually allows them to understand the game and to play the game? That's what our attempt with the Best Friends Forever skill tree is."

This doesn’t mean that experienced players won’t have reasons to try the Mechromancer out, as another skill tree that’s currently in development will cater to hardcore individuals.

"Right now, I'm thinking of it as a hardcore mode. So if you are a really expert player, and you want to do some tricky, difficult things, this is the tree for you, for just a totally different experience. We're not ready to talk about it, because we have no idea if it's even going to pan out. But we've got some interesting ideas there."

Borderlands 2 is out on September 18, in North America, and September 21, in Europe and the rest of the world.
