Gearbox Software continues giving details on its upcoming Borderlands 2 first person shooter, this time sharing some more info about how the game will still try to reward players who experience it alone, instead of with friends or strangers, by making the combat more tactical.

Borderlands 1 delivered a great experience but, if you tried it out alone, the whole thing got a bit repetitive and quite challenging.

With the sequel, while there’s still a focus on cooperative action between the four (five, provided you get the Mechromancer DLC) classes, the game also rewards solo players who have strategy skills.

"The story stuff and the mission system... that works really well with the guys who love to play solo," Gearbox Vice President Steve Gibson told CVG. "Because we want people who are passionate about that solo experience to experience that. So yeah, the story telling and the mission system is aimed right at those guys, because that's a big deal. Tons of people play solo and a lot of guys don't like [strangers] messing with their story."

In order to make things a bit more strategical and rewarding to players, the game’s map is now interconnected, meaning you’ll get to see landmarks from other areas, and the artificial intelligence system is much smarter, offering a bigger challenge.

“There’s an AI ecosystem,” Gibson said. “Not only is the AI more reactive but the AI can cooperate. The surveyor robots can come and heal guys. Skags can get fire effects from other enemies and turn into more menacing enemies. This makes combat become a more tactical experience.”

Of course, Borderlands 2 truly shines when you’re playing with friends, so you can bet that plenty of things were added to also reward those who work as a team against their enemies.

Borderlands 2 is out in September for PC, PS3 and Xbox 360.
