The PlayStation Vita version of Borderlands 2 keeps much of what drew players to the regular PC and console version of Gearbox’s game, but limits the online cooperative play options to only two players.

The news was revealed on the PlayStation Blog, in a post covering hands-on impressions of the game, and suggesting that the multiplayer limitation was enforced due to some technical restrictions, preventing the option for four-player multiplayer, like in the PC and console versions.

“We checked in with the SCEA Third Party Production team, who confirmed that while they strived to include four-player co-op in the game, they made a decision late in their development cycle to focus on providing the best two-player-only co-op experience possible,” wrote SCEA’s Justin Massongill. “As a result, the maximum co-operative player count for Borderlands 2 on PS Vita is capped at two.”

Another information that is of considerable interest is the fact that Borderlands 2 runs “in the vicinity” of 30 frames per second on Sony’s handheld gaming platform, the figure being conducive to a satisfactory gameplay experience.

The PlayStation Vita version of Borderlands 2 also offers cross-save compatibility with the PlayStation 3 version, which is a very welcome feature, and also comes with some pieces of DLC released for the big screen versions, including Captain Scarlett and her Pirate’s Booty and Mr Torgue’s Campaign of Carnage.

The game is set to come out on May 6, worldwide.
