Gearbox wanted the feature but Sony and Microsoft didn’t

It seems that Gearbox Software toyed with the idea of offering cross-platform multiplayer with its recent Borderlands 2 shooter but the feature was quickly overruled by first-party hardware makers Sony and Microsoft, according to the studio's President, Randy Pitchford.

Borderlands 2 delivered a stunning shooter experience back in September, combining the intense and cooperative-focused gameplay of a shooter with the addictive loot-dropping of a dungeon crawler RPG.

Apparently, the game was supposed to have one very impressive feature, as Gearbox wanted to include cross-platform multiplayer with Borderlands 2 across the PC, PS3, or Xbox 360.

Sadly, this idea was quickly snubbed by Sony and Microsoft, as the companies didn't want PS3 or Xbox 360 owners to play together.

Gearbox President Randy Pitchford confirmed this on his Twitter account, via GameShampoo, replying to a fan who had asked about cross-platform play and saying that “first parties said no,” in regards to the special multiplayer mechanic.

Would you have liked to play Borderlands 2 alongside your friends no matter the platform?
