It seems that Gearbox Software toyed with the idea of offering cross-platform multiplayer with its recent Borderlands 2 shooter but the feature was quickly overruled by first-party hardware makers Sony and Microsoft, according to the studio's President, Randy Pitchford.

Borderlands 2 delivered a stunning shooter experience back in September, combining the intense and cooperative-focused gameplay of a shooter with the addictive loot-dropping of a dungeon crawler RPG.

Apparently, the game was supposed to have one very impressive feature, as Gearbox wanted to include cross-platform multiplayer with Borderlands 2 across the PC, PS3, or Xbox 360.

Sadly, this idea was quickly snubbed by Sony and Microsoft, as the companies didn't want PS3 or Xbox 360 owners to play together.

Gearbox President Randy Pitchford confirmed this on his Twitter account, via GameShampoo, replying to a fan who had asked about cross-platform play and saying that “first parties said no,” in regards to the special multiplayer mechanic.

Would you have liked to play Borderlands 2 alongside your friends no matter the platform?

It is time for this to happen. Microsoft and Sony, your fans want it, make it happen.

Why wounldn't customers want this? The only reason to deny this is for selfish reasons at microsoft and sony. Halo (the first one) was actually multiplayer across PC and Xbox. The main issue it created was in competitive multiplayer because the mouse keyboard combo is a much more accurate control system that a console controller - however since multiplayer in Borderlands is co-op it doesn't suffer from this issue.

Where are you getting this information from? The closest thing Halo got to cross-platform gameplay was between PC and Mac. No Halo games has EVER had PC/Xbox cross compatibility.

If Sony or Microsoft think that taking this stance is going to increase sales of their platforms significantly then I believe that they are sorely mistaken. If anything it is more likely to cost them and the software developers sales.

I play BL2 on PC, and if I could play with Xbox 360 players, my interest in the game would be significantly greater. This political hampering is hugely disappointing.

It would have been awesome to have some sort of cross console mini-games, such as clearing a map or doing a quest faster then the other team. (Teams being either xbox ps3 or pc) Or even having a 4-10 way duel in a whole map. One major drawback with BL2 as it stands is the VERY small duel "arenas". It gives Zero almost no chance against a mechro, as deathtrap is more or less a one hit kill against Zero.

If xbox and ps3 gamers can play against each other then both companies worry about selling less copies of games and less systems.

Sony is also patenting something to make used games obsolete (as in, ps4 won't take used games at all, you have to buy them new). So just stop buying Sony products and maybe microsoft will be okay with xbox vs PC cross-platform :).

Sony have stated that this isnt true, it will be able to play used games fine unless the game developers themselves do something about it.
