The September issues of video game focused magazine Game Informer has revealed that developer Gearbox is already hard at work on Borderlands 2, the follow-up to its 2009 first-person shooter that used the science fiction genre and sprinkled it liberally with humor, huge amounts of guns and bright colors.

It seems that the game will again take place on the alien world of Pandora, which is now a transformed place after the events of the first game in the series, most of them set in motion by the player himself.

The developers working at Gearbox on Borderlands 2 are saying that they are not satisfied with just adding more guns, more enemies and more quests, but they are aiming to tell a much better story than that of the first game, although it's not clear whether the Destroyer and the corporations will again be the focus.

To achieve this aim, they are creating a new mission system, which will add variety and depth, while also developing more powerful enemies that are smarter when it comes to tactics and more locations with different environments for the player to explore.

It makes sense for Gearbox to also keep the four-player cooperative structure that made the first game such a success and add new elements to it, innovating for the benefit of returning fans while also keeping it simple for newcomers.

Gearbox is a busy developer at the moment as they are working on Aliens: Colonial Marines, a game that was presumed canceled for quite some time, and Brother in Arms: Furious 4, which was first shown at this year's E3.

Considering that the official announcement is coming in September, it would make sense to see the game launch either in late 2012 or in early 2013, presumably on all home consoles and on the PC.

Publishing duties will again be handled by 2K Games.
