The online mode is operational thanks to Steamworks

Borderlands 1 has just received a brand new patch on the PC platform that's finally set to introduce a new multiplayer infrastructure based on Valve's own Steamworks suite, once again allowing owners to partake in online antics, after the shutdown of GameSpy, the provider of its first online mode.

GameSpy powered a lot of major games a few years ago, allowing for a simple multiplayer infrastructure that didn't involve the developer or publisher to buy expensive servers and maintain them so that customers could have a great time online.

Unfortunately, GameSpy shut down earlier this summer, leaving many games without functional online modes. While some developers and publishers acted fast and patched their titles, others, such as Gearbox Software and 2K Games with Borderlands 1, only gave a vague promise about instituting a new online mode.

Now, those promises have been kept, as Borderlands 1 has received a new patch on Steam that re-enables the multiplayer mode, this time basing it on Valve's own Steamworks suite.

What's more, owners of disc-based copies of the game on PC can go through a process to redeem a free copy via Steam, so that they can also play online with their friends. You can follow the procedure detailed on the 2K website.
