Amy Winehouse is no stranger to controversy or to an exaggerated share of attention from the media. First of all, she broke the ice with her first album 'Frank', but that was just a launching platform for the British singer.
The media immediately picked up the scent of scandal and Amy's comments on a wide range of topics (eating disorder, drugs, relationships and alcohol) as well as her deep love for illegal substances quickly made her into one of the paparazzi's favorites. But many did not overlook her impressive voice and unmatchable talent. It would have been close to impossible to do that...
After a stint in rehab, Miss Winehouse is back with a brand new album, 'Back to Black', in which the move from a '50s jazz sound to a more '60s soul is barely perceptible. The same voice of the '40-year-old black woman from Brooklyn' (as some have described her specific sound) continues to amaze and enchant the listener.
'You Know I'm No Good', video and single, are both brilliant. So good, in fact, that they almost seem taken from another period, a time in which the likes of Paris Hilton or Jordan would have never made it to sing a single note, not to mention an entire album. The good ol' times are evoked time and time again, with each note of saxophone or drum beat, while Amy's amazing voice carries with it the emotion of the woman who has to tell her man that she told him she's 'no good'.
Personally, I would have never thought real talent still existed in showbiz. Happily, I am more than satisfied to say I was wrong: Amy is a true performer to the core, a music professional such as they existed in the bygone times.
