Nuance Communications, Inc., the company whose voice software is used by Apple in their Mac operating system, today announced that its Dragon Mobile SDK is powering the voice search capabilities in Bon’App, a new iPhone app.

Bon’App is described as a revolutionary application that will completely change the way we think about and search for the food we eat.

Aiming to change the way people think about and search for healthy food options, Bon’App is the brainchild of the Nuance Mobile Developer Program.

The program assists developers in coding their ideas by offering access to the Dragon Mobile SDK (software development kit) that features the core speech recognition capabilities found in the Dragon solutions developed by Nuance.

To make one thing clear, Nuance is not directly responsible for Bon’App. The software was actually coded by Laurent Adamowicz, a Harvard University Advanced Leadership Initiative Fellow, alongside a team of Harvard graduate students.

Bon’App draws on the expertise of medical professionals, registered dietitians, and nutritionists to earn its name of “nutritionist in your pocket.”

It provides individualized suggestions that help consumers eat healthier food. According to the developers, Bon'App tells you “in plain language” what your food contains and how healthy it is for you.

It also keeps track of your own food preferences, food allergies, and dietary goals.

“Bon’App was designed to make it easier than ever to quickly access and enjoy healthy foods tailored to an individual’s lifestyle, no matter where she or he is – at home, at work, or on the go,” said Laurent Adamowicz, president and CEO, Bon’App.

“By integrating Nuance’s voice capabilities, we’re able to enhance Bon’App’s user experience so that our consumers can simply speak the name of a food or ingredient, like chocolate or cheese, to find what they are craving,” said Adamowicz.

“The Nuance Mobile Developer Program’s success lies in part with the fact that virtually any developer can voice-enable any app – and in a matter of days,” said Matt Revis, vice president of product management and marketing, Nuance Mobile.

“Bon’App further demonstrates the flexibility and possibilities of voice search powered by Dragon to not only enhance the user interface, but to personalize the mobile app experience and their overall mobile lifestyle,” added Revis.

Bon'App is compatible with iPhone, iPod touch and iPad and requires iOS 3.1.3 or later, meaning even first-generation devices are supported.
