BoinxTV is touted as being the pioneering live-production software for video podcasters. The software can turn any Mac into a TV studio “for the rest of us,” according to its maker, provided that the Mac is a new-generation model. BoinxTV is the winner of an Apple Design Award (Mac OS X Leopard Developer Showcase).

“Record stunning studio shows, podcasts, sports events, concerts, interviews, sermons, seminars and more using your Mac, multiple cameras, microphones and other footage,” Boinx Software, the maker of BoinxTV for Mac, says. “With its innovative user interface, BoinxTV makes it easy to create professional ‘TV style’ recordings, setting a new quality level in the production of video podcasts.”

“Video podcasters currently have to spend many hours editing their takes to get a professional looking result. Post-production is a time-consuming part of their workflow,” the company explains, emphasizing that, “BoinxTV reduces the overall production time dramatically as cuts, graphic effects, titles and more can be applied during the recording of the show. Everything that can be done during live recording does not have to be done in post production.”

According to the release notes, version 1.4.2 features major enhancements to the whole audio engine of BoinxTV. For example, in case an input device fails temporarily (or changes its format), the app now restarts it again immediately. According to Boinx Software, “This will result in a very short audio gap and probably a noticable click, but at least audio will continue to work afterwards.”

The company also discloses that it has taken the necessary steps to better cope with situations where the audio engine is overloaded for a short amount of time. Also, recordings producing “choppy” audio after a while should not occur anymore. “Silence will now be inserted when audio is overloaded for too long,” Boinx Software adds. Better fidelity with the sound of DV cameras, and improved internal error handling in all areas have also been incorporated. In addition to these enhancements, input devices (cameras and microphones) can now also be renamed while documents are open. Boinx Software notes that there’s still room for improvements here.

The developer has added an option to the Presenter layer to fade out the background when displaying Source B in fullscreen mode with the option “Show whole image” selected, noting that, “Users who understand this explanation might actually appreciate the new option.” Although there are dozens of other changes worth mentioning, rounding up the list of updates are small fixes to renaming recordings in the export dialog, as well as small user interface-related improvements.

BoinxTV calls for an Intel-based Mac with discrete graphics or a dual-processor PowerMac G5 with an ATI graphics, 2 GB of RAM, Mac OS X Leopard (10.5.5 or higher) and QuickTime 7.5.5 or higher.
