Don’t believe everything you read on the web

A report by Guardian Liberty Voice is saying the iPhone 6 is already being upstaged by iPhone 7 rumors. In addition to this totally fabricated claim, the publication goes as far as to dish out some technical specifications.

We want to steer users clear of any fake rumors involving the iPhone 7. Most of you will smell the bogus claims a mile away, but for those of you who aren’t in the loop and might be tempted to believe the allegations in these so-called news stories, the following is a correction-per-quote of some key excerpts from the article in question.

Apple “testing” the market with new rumors

“With Apple’s recently released iPhone 6 setting the cell phone world ablaze, there is already talk of it being upstaged by the yet to be designed iPhone 7.”

No, there isn’t. The publication purposely invented this rumor so they could lay the basis of their arguments-to-follow.

“While the iPhone 7 is still in the speculative stage, apparently it is never too early for Apple to test the market with new product rumors.”

Apple never tests the market with product rumors. And if it does, you can be sure this information falls on the lap of a one or two high-profile journalists who certainly aren’t working for Guardian Liberty Voice.

“In addition, there is no better time for Apple to spread rumors than a time when the company is riding a tidal wave of publicity.”

Apple doesn’t spread rumors. In fact, it tries its best to muffle them and keep a tight lid on its developments and designs. While some companies benefit from injecting rumors into the mainstream media, the Cupertino giant prefers the exact opposite: create mystery around its products. It's equally powerful.

“Demand and success seems to follow every iPhone release, and the iPhone 6 is no different. Long consumer lines have become the norm for Apple’s new products. It is not surprising, therefore, that rumors of an iPhone 7 release are already being heard.”

There’s zero connection between the three phrases that make up this paragraph. Basically, the article just inserts a new iPhone 7 reference, gratis.

A solid launch date

“Those rumors have the new iPhone being released next year.”

It’s common knowledge that Apple iterates the iPhone every year, and yes there’s actually a pretty good chance that next year’s upgrade will render the S nomenclature obsolete.

But there’s no evidence to support the claim that iPhone 7 is coming next year or even the year after that. It’s just an educated guess (and it pains me to use the term “educated” here).

Gesture control, waterproof internals, in “all likelihood”

Here comes the fun part, where Guardian Liberty Voice actually attempts to dish out some specs.

“Gesture control will enable an individual to use the iPhone 7 without actually touching it.”

Quite a bold statement considering there are zero hardware / software indications of these developments taking place at Apple. Not that it’s impossible. But where’s the evidence? A citation at least.

“It is also rumored to be slightly slimmer and weighing as much as current models. It will be more of a phablet than a smart phone. Gesture control, solar power, and waterproofing will, in all likelihood, be included.”

“The new units will surely have sapphire glass that will address the bending issue being encountered in the current iPhone 6 Plus models.”

In all “likelihood,” “surely.” A pretty safe approach in case every claim in the report turns out wrong.

The report then confidently states, “Gesture control will enable an individual to use the iPhone 7 without actually touching it. The phone will also charge throughout the day via solar power, thereby prolonging battery life.”

And then returns to its presuming nature (emphasis mine), “With more and more smart phones becoming water-resistant, Apple is sure to follow suit. It’s [sic] waterproofing, however, will protect the entire device, including circuit boards.”

Bottom line, choose your sources carefully. Don’t buy into unfounded rumors. Just because there’s a new invention that waterproofs electronics, that doesn’t mean Apple is working on the iPhone 7.
